What Day is it Again?

By theprofessionalhobo ~ August 14th, 2008. Filed under: Australia, life at Kingbilli.

Days of the week have lost all meaning on me. Although I generally know what day of the week it is, I sometimes struggle to remember, and shortly thereafter realize that it rarely matters.

Sure, there are things I have to do on certain days. Wednesday nights are Rotary meetings, Thursdays are the days that the library is open for the longest hours with free wireless internet access, and we have a schedule of working days to stay on top of here at Kingbilli.

But the conventional view upon what day of the week it is; customarily looking forward to the weekends with various Friday night rituals and Sunday morning brunches, then plodding through the weekdays – bah.

Last Tuesday night, we decided it was “Friday”. We didn’t have anything pressing to do on Wednesday during the day, and we resolved that we would stay up late watching movies and playing games on Tuesday night with the intention of sleeping in a bit (read: 8am – yawn, stretch, “that was nice!”) and making a lovely “weekend brunch” the following morning.

In fact, our mission for Tuesday to become Friday was so successful, that we actually woke up on Wednesday morning convinced that it was Saturday!

Now I must digress: I expect that I am painting a picture of us lolly-gagging about, sipping tea and eating bonbons all day, in lives of utter luxury.

And to some extent, we actually feel that way!

But realistically, we do work. I write for up to 20 hours a week, not including (sometimes extensive) internet time, we both work part-time on the property in exchange for our accommodation, and we chip in an extra little bit whenever we can.

To go into town (which we have been known to do up to four times a week) is almost half an hour each way, and it seems that everything in a small country town takes longer to do.

We also have our own sets of errands to do that many city folks don’t consider, like collecting and chopping firewood and various outdoor maintenance projects.

But something just feels right about the lifestyle we lead. The pace is relaxed, the folks are friendly, and there is no “Monday morning” to dread waking up to. Every day is different, and we are at liberty to change our routine if it gets boring or too repetitive. We are in total command of our hours, days, and weeks.

So we have rewritten the daily and weekly calendar to suit the way it’s supposed to be lived. Saturday? Bah. Tuesday? No matter. Thursday? Bring it on.
